BNZ says you may not need a lawyer to switch your home loan — but should you sign without one?
BNZ is advertising that eligible customers can switch their home loan to BNZ without finding their own lawyer or paying legal fees — potentially saving up to $2,500.
That sounds appealing. Who would not want to save money?
But before you sign, ask yourself one important question:
If you do not have your own lawyer, who is protecting you?
A bank’s role is to lend you money.
Your lawyer’s role is to protect you.
Even a refinance that looks “simple” can still carry risks. For example, you may sign loan documents without fully understanding a cashback clawback, break fees, repayment conditions, wider security obligations, or how the refinance affects a trust, guarantor, or relationship property situation.
By the time you realise there is an issue, it may be too late — because you have already signed.
Saving legal fees upfront may feel like a win, but your home is usually your biggest asset. Independent legal advice gives you someone in your corner, checking the documents, explaining the risks, and making sure the terms are right for you, not just the bank.
So before switching your home loan, do not just ask:
“How much will I save?”
Ask:
“Am I properly protected?”
If you are thinking about refinancing, speak to your lawyer before you sign. A short legal review now could save you far more than $2,500 later.
No legal fees does not always mean no legal risk.
